HUNDRED WATERS – BOREAL

Folktronica, or electrofolk, is defined by Wikipedia as a “genre of music comprising various elements of folk music and electronica, often featuring samplings of acoustic instruments—especially stringed instruments—and incorporating hip hop rhythms”. Well that honestly doesn’t seem like anything new, artists have been doing this for years. But with the Florida based quintet, the relatively new genre name seems perfect. Boreal, with their two earthy female vocalists, sounds like Joanna Newsom was doubled and then shot out into a different galaxy. Two live and unlooped vocals alongside a real drum kit get fused with keyboard chords, drum machines, and enough sci-fi sound effects to give it a great build and release. It makes for an incredibly exciting listen.
