DRAKE – TOO MUCH
For Fans of: The Roots, The Weeknd,
Is it hard to accept Ryan Gosling as a cold-blooded killer when he starred in Breaker High? Is it hard to believe that Justin Timberlake brought sexy back when he sang in the Mickey Mouse Club? Is it hard to see Jared Leto as a fight club badass when he is in the band Thirty Seconds to Mars? And is it hard to admit Aubrey Graham, the young man who played the wheeling b-baller in Degrassi: The Next Generation, made one of the best hip hop albums of 2013?
Ya, I guess it is, but I try not to think about it too much.
And it certainly helps when the beats are this good. Tracks like Tuscan Leather, Started From the Bottom, Wu-Tang Forever, Worst Behaviour, From Time, Connect, and Hold On, We’re Going Home have such instantly enjoyable instrumentals that it is hard to see Nothing Was the Same as anything but a success. And with the excellent Jimmy Fallon performance, Too Much will join that list as another fan favourite. With a soulful and calming chorus delivered by frequent SBTRKT collaborator Sampha, and Drake’s top quality flow about family complications (remember when Kanye sounded like this?), it offers a chilled and relatable track that shines a little brighter in an album full of gems.
